Bug List

The following bug me in my everyday life:

1.     Waiting too long to see someone whom I have an appointment with, specifically the doctor.
a.     Why it Exists: The person falls behind schedule for unforeseen reason, or something comes up that puts them behind schedule.
2.     When I have to wait too long for a certain machine at the gym, specifically my home gym of retro fitness in New York. During 5-9pm it is crazy busy during the rush home from work.
a.     Why it Exists: 5-9pm is when the majority of people are coming home from work, and the gym simply isn’t big enough to accommodate such a rush of people.
3.     Walking through Turlington plaza while people preach their ideas that are sometimes crazy. All I want to do is get to class, and not be bothered.
a.     Why it Exists:
4.     When I go to the healthy eatery back home to get a shake after the gym and they are out of my favorite flavor, chocolate peanut butter.
a.     Why it Exists:
5.     When I order a package and it says it will be delivered on a certain day, and it doesn’t show up that day while I am anxiously waiting for it.
a.     Why it Exists: The delivery service may be backed up for some reason, or the information in the system software may be incorrect and providing an inaccurate delivery date.
6.     When I am putting on a rubber glove at work to prepare food and it rips the second I get it on my hand.
a.     Why it Exists: Sometimes I am in a rush and rip the glove from pulling too hard, other times it is just a weak spot in the glove that easily tears.
7.     When the light on Fort Salonga road back home skips a cycle and the line of cars backs up past the train tracks
a.     Why it Exists: There must be a malfunction in the hardware or the traffic light that sometimes affects the light cycles.
8.     While I am busy working out and my apple headphones fall out of my ear midway through the exercise I am doing.
a.     Why it Exists: The wire gets caught on something like my arm and gets yanked out, wireless headphones are much easier.
9.     When it starts to pour outside and I am on my scooter, and as a result I end up soaking wet.
a.     Why it Exists: Weather is unpredictable
10.   When I come home after a long day and want to take a hot shower but the water takes way too long to heat up
a.     Why it Exists: I suppose the water heater just doesn’t work as well as it should sometimes
11.  When I am using a phone or computer and the app I am using quits unexpectedly
a.     Why it exists: Either connection is poor or it is a temporary malfunction in the device.
12.  When Grill fresh in Gainesville is out of their roasted pork
a.     Why it exists: pork is a very popular item there and If you’re too late, you miss out on it.
13.  When I see a person driving and looking straight down on their phone, not paying attention to the road at all.
a.     Why it exists: people just seem to be unable to realize that it can wait, and that you are risking your life and those around you.
14.  When the Ralphs on Jericho turnpike is out of strawberry shortcake ices when it was what I was looking forward to all night
a.     Why it exists: They seem to make extremely limited quantities of this flavor, even though it would be their most popular.
15.  When I am carrying bags into my house/dorm and one of them rips, resulting in everything spilling onto the driveway or street.
a.     Why it exists: I sometimes am too lazy to make more than one trip, and those flimsy plastic bags aren’t the strongest.
16.  When I use plastic utensils and they snap while trying to scoop something/eat something
a.     Why it exists: The plastic isn’t strong enough/flexible enough to work properly in some containers of food, like far down a peanut butter jar
17.  When I accidentally bump into a picture while walking down my hallway and it falls off the wall.
a.     Why it exists: Although sometimes it is due to my clumsiness, a standard nail may not be strong enough to hold a picture into the wall if something touches it.
18.  When I see people throw a plastic or paper item in the garbage when there is a recycling bin right next to it.
a.     Why it exists: sheer laziness of humans and lack of care for the environment
19.  When my iPhone suddenly dies at 30 percent battery
a.     Why it exists: the battery display must be incorrect or there is a problem with the iPhone battery itself.
20.  When my dog barks to go out and I open the door but he doesn’t go out
a.     Why it exists: Who really knows besides the dog.

Reflection: I actually did find this assignment quite difficult. I was easily able to come up with about ten “bugs” but after that it became increasingly difficult. In the moment something may seem like a huge inconvenience, when in reality it is just for that moment, and not something you see in your everyday life. I believe that many of these bugs could be solved with strategic thinking, planning, and acting.

  1. I agree with your Reflection as I also found it hard to come up with 20 bugs. I feel like most of the time these things don't cause enough problem in my life to make me want to drastically change what I'm doing to find a way to fix the problem right this second. A lot of your bugs were also very relatable like the one about the packages not being delivered on the correct date. Amazon does that to me literally all the time and I hate it. It's especially inconvenient when you order something because you need it by a certain date.

  2. Some of your bugs are so relatable! I too have a hatred for plastic utensils because of how cheap and flimsy they are. I also have been in Turlington plaza and heard some pretty crazy stuff. I think UF should give people a designated area to preach things like that, preferably in a less populated area with lots of commotion. You're reflection highlights how simples some of the fixes are for bugs. I found that to be true with most of my bugs as well. Good stuff in this post!

  3. I was able to come up with about 7 bugs that bugged me really easily, but after that it was difficult. The phone dying thing is so relatable, my phone dies when it hits 50%. I try to recycle as much as I can, and it makes me upset when my roommates just throw out everything even when we have recycling bins next to out trash. I feel like we have many of the similar bugs.

  4. #5 is all too true. The past 2 times that I have ordered packages off of Amazon, I have paid extra for one day shipping. And sure enough, the products don't even arrive in 3 days. I understand that there can be issues at the post office/ delivery service headquarters, but if I pay extra to have it shipped faster, it better get here when it promises.

  5. The apple earphones falling out, the dog not wanting to go out after barking, and the plastic bags ripping ALWAYS happen to me. It is not a surprise that they happen to you too. It is so annoying when you make the effort to open the door for your dog and they do not want to leave when you're in the middle of doing something. Also, the bags ripping and the earphones are SO ANNOYING and I have to stop what I am doing in the middle of my work out and/ or groceries spilling in the middle of the street. I also had trouble finding information as the list increased.

  6. Hey Ben,
I too have the issue of waiting excessively long at the doctor’s office. I don’t know if it’s an issue of over booking or if the office constantly runs behind on their appointments but it is very annoying. Also, scooting while it is raining is awful. Not only do I end up soaking wet but, if I am driving fast enough, the water feels like little pellets are hitting me. Great post, Ben!
