Entrepreneurship Story

Since a young age, I have been exposed to entrepreneurship through various people and aspects in my life. However, the one that I feel I have the closest connection to is my uncle’s bakeries. He didn’t go to college, but instead pursued a career in which he was self-made. He took over the bakery at age 20 after his “mentor” passed it on to him, and since has expanded to multiple locations, as well as opening up a few delis along the way. Whenever I go visit him, I am always sure to stop by to see how business is going, and even help him behind the counter if he needs. It is very inspiring to see someone become so successful with all the hard work and long hours they put in. Hopefully I got the entrepreneurial “gene” as well.

I enrolled in this class because the idea of being your own boss and running your own company seems very appealing. There is something rewarding about taking an idea of your own, and turning it into something wildly successful. I hope to learn more about the habits and thought process of entrepreneurs, as well as what I can do I the future to make any business I start successful. Essentially, what are the key differences that separate a failing company from a successful company?

  1. Ben,
The fact that your uncle was able to make a successful bakery chain even though he didn't go to college is amazing. I have a particular interest in stories like this because sometimes I question if college is as important as society makes it out to be. Clearly in this case your uncle managed to achieve great success even without a degree. One other thing I noticed is that you said hopefully you get the entrepreneurial gene. Remember that nobody is born an entrepreneur, it is in all of us. You can certainly be an entrepreneur if you decide to be and utilize the right tools. Great post by the way! Looking forward to seeing more from you throughout the semester.

  2. My dad also didn't go to college and has found success as a businessman. I think some people underestimate people that don't have a formal higher education because everything I have learned from my father has been stuff he has learned through experience, as I am sure is the same with your uncle. Props to him for creating such a successful business and proving that you don't need to a degree to be successful!

  3. Hey Ben,
It is funny that you said, "I hope I get the entrepreneurial gene." Your uncle's business seems to be successful. Also, the fact that you help out your uncle at the bakery shows a lot about who you really are and your ability to help your family members out. I think that you don't always have to go to college to be successful, so it is great that your uncle turned out to be one.

  4. Hi Ben,
I love that your uncle didn't go to college and has become a successful business owner. I truly believe that more people in our society should be opting out of college and starting businesses and learning trades. I understand the irony of saying that on a college-required blog, but I wouldn't be here if my degree didn't essentially require a degree. Anyway, there's a big difference between running one bakery and expanding and running multiple locations. Your uncle must be quite the businessman. That's pretty cool that you get to work with him and learn how he operates things. Great story

  5. Great post Ben! I feel that I can personally relate to your post about your uncle. My father is self-made, did not go to college, and worked extremely hard in order have his own construction company. Like you I also enrolled in this class because one day I want to be my own boss and feel that this class offers great knowledge of how to one day be a successful entrepreneur.

  6. Hey Ben!

It is so amazing that your uncle became a successful entrepreneur through hard work and experience. Very few people create successful businesses without college degrees, so it is very impressive your uncle managed to open multiple bakeries. I am sure your uncle can serve as an incredibly helpful mentor. I also decided to take this class for the purpose of forming my own business someday.

  7. Hello Ben,
Your story sounds like your uncle took the bull by the horns and ran with it. He took a risk by choosing to be an entrepreneur over going to college but, because of his hard work, his risk payed off. Also, his high ambition was showcased with his discontent in running just one bakery. The fact that he opened up several different bakeries and even branched out into deli’s is very inspirational. Thank you for sharing!
