11A-Idea napkin No.1

1)    My name is Ben Katz, and in the business world I am naturally a good salesman, and can convince people that they need a product, when in reality they don’t. However, overall my talents in this category are fairly limited. My aspiration is to build a successful business that offers a product that can improve the lives of all who use it. I see this business (smart traffic light technology) as something that can improve the commute time to work, and really any destination for those across the country.

2)    I am offering customers the most up-to-date advanced traffic light technology. This is designed to improve the flow of traffic, and ensure that you are not waiting at a red light unless absolutely necessary. Too many times, cars are sitting a red light when there is no one coming in the other direction where the light is green. My business would aim to solve that problem and install these smart traffic lights country and maybe even worldwide.

3)    I am offering this to anyone who drives a motor vehicle, as everyone gets stuck at traffic lights at some point while they are driving. I would focus my growth at first in big cities and suburbs that are densely populated. Not only do they have more actual traffic lights, but they also have much more traffic volume and the need for technology like this is higher.

4)    The customers would care about my service because it would save them time every single day. No one likes sitting in traffic, and if there was something people could have that would reduce traffic backup, everyone would want it. There are few things that people hate more than sitting in traffic. Customers would pay for my service in their taxes for this reason

5)    We would install the lights the fastest out of any other companies. I cannot really comment too much on the technology, as this would not be mine since it already exists, It’s just a question of implementing it to places that need it the most.

I believe that all of these elements fit together nicely, however the only problem I could foresee for this class is that the technology already exists. In reality, I am not creating anything new. I would be creating a distribution company that receives licensing from the companies that did create the technology. I think I need to do more research in the area of distribution and what part of taxpayers money goes to city improvements that would cover the installment of new traffic systems.

  1. Nice post, I love the idea of smart lights in Gainesville. I know that the intersection at Butler and Archer is particularly bad about being on a short timer and backing traffic up really badly. This seems like a win for the city. My only question was going to be how the city would pay for it, but it looks like you're trying to figure that out yourself right now. Great idea, keep working through it!

  2. Ben, I can easily relate to you, because I also consider myself to be a good salesman. I like how you want to implement this innovative technology. After sitting at the intersection of Archer Rd and 34th St for what feels like an eternity, this technology would save people time and gas money, and improve the flow of traffic throughout cities across the United States.

  3. Ben,
I like your approach to this opportunity as a whole. Rather than saying you think there is a bunch of money to be made, you see the opportunity to help improve the lives of the people around you. This is an important trait of all great entrepreneurs. Nobody gets rich trying to get rich. Find something that makes the lives of everyday people just a little bit better, and the money will come. You do a great job of that here! Looking forward to seeing more from you!

  4. Hi Ben, I think your idea is interesting and your description of yourself as a salesman and an entrepreneur adds to your credibility. I do think it could potentially be a problem that this technology already exists, however, I think that if it is refined appropriately then it could serve and entirely new purpose and be extremely helpful to those who commute by car.

  5. Hey Ben!

I really enjoyed your post and I like your confidence in your sale strategy. I also feel that your idea can change the way that we drive and view traffic. Overall I think that this idea can also make a lot of money and has the potential to impact many lives. I hate traffic and this idea is brilliant! I hope to one day see it Gainesville.

  6. Hi Ben!

Your smart traffic light technology would alleviate the heavy flow of traffic and wasted time people spend at traffic lights. I’ve lived in Miami most of my life, and I would love to have this service to reduce ten-minute red lights I sometimes must endure when I go back home. If you can implement your product in big cities throughout the United States faster than other companies, then you will certainly capitalize on your idea.

  7. Ben,

Although you didn't create any new technology, there is still a huge market for the smart traffic light because the traffic issue is getting worse and worse nowadays. You said you are a good salesman, that makes you get close to the customers which is good for you to achieve your goal. I believe your aspiration will someday come true. Good job!
